In its 100-year history, Herron has produced artists, designers, scholars, teachers and administrators who have illuminated the visual arts at points all over the globe. Each academic year, Herron educates more than 700 students pursuing careers in the visual arts and design. In Indiana, Herron provides curators, exhibitors, historians and teachers to institutions including the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indianapolis Art center, Indiana State Museum, University of Notre Dame, and kindergarten through 12th-grade classrooms across the state.
Herron's academic programs have gained national and international attention. We continue to expand curricular offerings and provide many opportunities for professional experience within the academic setting. Through school-sponsored community projects such as public sculpture commissions, mural competitions and the design of catalogues, posters, brochures and websites, Herron students acquire practical knowledge and experience while working with clients.
Beginning in fall 2005, Herron will occupy its 155,000 square foot new facility on the Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis campus. This relocation marks a new chapter in Herron's hundred-year history, and reaffirms Herron's commitment to art education: to its rich past vibrant present, and promising future. This new location places Herron in the center of Indianapolis's cultural arts corridor. The first phase of Herron's new home, the Sculpture and Ceramics building, was completed and opened for classes in January 2000.
Herron's international programs offer exceptional opportunities for students to travel to China, France, Vietnam, London, Belgium, and The Netherlands. Herron also organizes excursions to galleries and museums in New York, Chicago, St. Louis, and Cincinnati. Approximately ten percent of Herron's students benefit each year from one of the Herron-sponsored trips.
