Martin University, a private, not-for-profit, non-denominational institution, was founded in 1977 by Rev. Boniface Hardin, O.S.B., who continues as president of the university. The university believes that education is the key to opening doors of opportunity.

Because the average age of our students is around 40, our instructors avoid a pedagogical approach found in most college classrooms. We employ a method known as andragogy, where we involve adult learners in the learning process, encouraging them to bring their considerable life and work experience into the discussions. President Hardin has said, "Higher education must be made available to all who can benefit," and that has been the overriding philosophy of Martin University.
Through his leadership, we have made it possible for persons who never thought they would go to college to earn one or more degrees, help them get better jobs, build their self-esteem, and serve as role models to family and friends who, as a result, have often chosen the same path at our University.
While our average student is an adult, often with children and even grandchildren, we are enrolling a growing number of students who are completing their high school education or who are recent graduates. The Joyce Yarbro Program and other offerings are aimed at recruiting and nurturing the younger students.
